St Joseph's Catholic Church stands at 140 Westbourne Grove in Northcote, a large red brick church in the Romanesque style with stucco dressings, which the Victorian Heritage Database describes as dominating the east end of the street. The parish was founded in 1893 in a timber church on Arthurton Road, and the brick church opened here in 1917. Inside it is warm and light: cream plaster walls opened up in patches to the brick underneath, a marble altar with a Last Supper panel, a round stained glass window over the sanctuary and a timber choir gallery at the back. Today it is one of four churches in the Alphington-Thornbury East Parish.

This guide follows the day in order, the way we photographed Ashley and Bryan's wedding here in May 2026: arriving, the ceremony, family photos outside, then portraits in the garden and up in the choir gallery.

Getting ready nearby

There are no getting ready rooms at the church, so plan on getting ready at home, at a family house or in a hotel, and arriving dressed. Ashley arrived dressed and waited at the back of the church with her dad until it was time to walk in.

Ceremony in the church

Weddings here are Catholic, either a wedding ceremony or a Nuptial Mass, and they are arranged through the parish office in Fairfield, which looks after all four churches. The parish asks for at least six months' notice, a first meeting with the priest with your documents, a pre-marriage course, a second meeting to settle the readings, prayers and music, and a rehearsal about a week before. You print your own order of service, but the parish office approves the draft first.

The church makes a lovely setting for it. The long centre aisle runs between timber pews to the sanctuary, where the couple sit side by side for the readings with the lectern to one side and the round window above. At Ashley and Bryan's wedding there were tall arrangements of red and white flowers either side of the crucifix, two family members looped a cord of rosary beads over the couple during the ceremony, and the register was signed at the altar table behind a row of candles.

The parish doesn't publish rules for photographers. Ask the priest where the photographer may stand and whether flash is allowed. We worked quietly from the side aisles, the back of the church and the choir gallery.

Portraits around the church

Everything is within a minute's walk of the doors:

  • The forecourt. Paved, in front of the red brick facade, with white roses along the wall. Big enough for everyone in one group photo, and where the family photos happen.
  • The garden. Brick paths, trees and, in autumn, a carpet of leaves beside the church's arched windows. A quiet spot for the two of you.
  • The front doors. Tall timber doors in a brick arch, which make a simple frame for a portrait together.
  • The choir gallery. Up the timber staircase at the back of the church, with round windows and a view down over the whole nave. Ask the parish first.
  • The staircase. Dark timber and tall arched windows, beautiful in black and white.

Ashley and Bryan booked an hour and a half from 1pm, and that was enough for the ceremony, the family groups and portraits in every one of these spots.

Celebrating afterwards

There is no reception at the church. The parish has a hall that it uses for its own events; ask the office about it, but most couples move on to a restaurant or reception venue nearby or in the city. Give your guests the address and parking details in your order of service or on your wedding website, and leave time for the drive.

A day at St Joseph's, hour by hour

Our camera files from Ashley and Bryan's Saturday carry no clock times, so here is the booked window and the order things happened in:

  • 1pm Our coverage begins as the family arrive and find their seats; Bryan waits at the front with his best man and the priest.
  • Then Ashley walks in with her dad, and the ceremony begins: readings, vows and rings, the rosary cord, kneeling at the altar.
  • Then The signing at the altar table, the kiss and the walk back down the aisle.
  • Then Family and friends on the forecourt.
  • Then Portraits in the garden and at the front doors.
  • 2.30pm Portraits in the choir gallery and on its staircase, and the end of our coverage.

If it rains

The ceremony is indoors, so rain only matters for the photos outside. The choir gallery and the staircase give you two indoor portrait spots with lovely window light, and the church doors make a sheltered frame on the way out. You would lose the forecourt group and the garden.

  • No weddings from Palm Sunday to Easter Monday, on 1 and 2 November, or from 24 to 26 December.

About St Joseph's Catholic Church, Northcote

Who can get married at St Joseph's Northcote?
The parish asks that at least one of you is a baptised and confirmed Catholic, and says to check with the parish priest, as other things may apply. St Joseph's is one of four churches in the Alphington-Thornbury East Parish, with St Anthony's, Holy Spirit and St Mary's, and weddings can be held in any of them.
How far ahead do we need to book a wedding at St Joseph's?
At least six months. The parish asks for six months' notice of your marriage, and bookings are made by appointment through the parish office after you have met the priest. Ask early if you have a particular Saturday in mind.
Can we have a Nuptial Mass or just a wedding ceremony?
Either. The parish offers a wedding ceremony outside Mass, or a Nuptial Mass, which includes the Liturgy of the Eucharist and Communion. Your celebrant will help you choose.
What paperwork and preparation do we need?
Each of you brings a full birth certificate, photo ID and a recent baptismal certificate showing your confirmation (dated within six months of the wedding) to the first meeting, plus a deed poll or naturalisation certificate if they apply. You also do a pre-marriage course; the parish points to the FOCCUS program run by Catholic Care Victoria.
Are there dates when weddings can't be held?
Yes. The parish doesn't book weddings from Palm Sunday to Easter Monday, on 1 and 2 November, or from 24 to 26 December. In Lent the flowers may be limited, and in Advent and Christmas the church's own decorations stay in place.
Can guests throw confetti or petals at St Joseph's?
No. The parish says no confetti, flowers, rice or anything similar may be thrown inside or outside the church. Plan something else for the walk out; at Ashley and Bryan's wedding the guests simply stood and clapped.
How many guests fit in St Joseph's?
The parish doesn't publish a number. It is a large church with a long centre aisle, side aisles and a choir gallery, and Ashley and Bryan's guests filled the front half of the pews with plenty of room to spare. Confirm numbers with the parish office.
Is there a reception venue at St Joseph's?
No. The church is for the ceremony. The parish has a hall it uses for its own gatherings; ask the office whether it is ever available, and otherwise plan a reception venue nearby or in the city.
Where can we take photos at St Joseph's?
On the paved forecourt in front of the church for family groups, in the garden beside the church with its brick paths and trees, at the tall timber doors, and inside, with the parish's permission, up in the choir gallery and on its staircase. We used all of them in an hour and a half with Ashley and Bryan.
Do you photograph weddings at St Joseph's Northcote?
Yes. We photographed Ashley and Bryan's ceremony and portraits here in May 2026, and their story is on this page. You can check your date in a minute.
