Mount Macedon Winery sits at 433 Bawden Road, Woodend, on the western slopes of Mount Macedon at about 680 metres, looking out over the Black Forest Valley. It is about an hour's drive from Melbourne. Around the cellar door and the restaurants there are vines, formal gardens with clipped hedges and tall cypresses, sloping lawns under gums and pines, a dam with an old slab hut beside it and paddocks where Highland cows graze.

Couples choose it because the whole day fits on one hill, from getting ready in the Garden Suite to dinner over the vines, and because the sunset over the valley is hard to beat. This guide follows the day in order, the way Jay and Sofia photographed Kristie and Gareth's wedding here on 35mm film in September 2026.

Getting ready at the winery

The venue offers the Garden Suite as the getting ready space: a king bedroom with a spa-bath ensuite, a kitchenette and a wood fire, sleeping two. The Homestead has four bedrooms (a king master with an ensuite, another king and two queens) and two bathrooms, and sleeps eight adults, so between them ten people can stay on site. That suits a couple and their bridal party, with everyone else staying nearby.

Kristie and her bridesmaids got ready in a house with a terracotta tiled roof, tall glass doors and a timber deck with steps down to the lawn. Its roof and pale walls match the building at the top of the ceremony lawn, but our frames don't name it, so ask the venue which rooms come with your booking. The bedroom was simple and white, with soft window light, and the deck and the lawn below it gave the bridesmaids room to toast in their pyjamas in the afternoon sun.

Ceremony on the lawn or in The Barn

The venue offers ceremonies outside in the gardens, on the lawns or among the vines, and indoors in The Barn, which it describes as rustic. A directory also lists the Cellar Door as an all-weather option. The venue gives an overall maximum of 170 guests but no figure for each ceremony spot, so confirm yours.

Kristie and Gareth married on a lawn that slopes down under tall gums and pines, with the dam, the paddocks and the valley opening out behind the celebrant. White folding chairs ran down the slope, an arrangement of red, pink and white flowers sat on the grass at the front, and a small timber-topped table waited for the signing. The page boys, the flower girl and then Kristie came down from a timber pergola at the top of the lawn. Before the ceremony a saxophone and guitar duo played on a rug in the formal garden while the guests gathered. The slope gives every guest a clear view of the front.

Portraits around the estate

Everything is a short walk from the ceremony lawn. Our route on Kristie and Gareth's day:

  • The formal garden. Clipped hedges and tall cypresses, a calm place for the groom and his party before the ceremony.
  • The big old tree on the lawn. It has a rope swing, and after Kristie and Gareth's ceremony a guest pushed a little boy on it.
  • The paddocks. Open grass running out to the tree line, with a big gum, and Highland cows that wander over to see what's going on.
  • The dam and the slab hut. An old timber slab hut stands beside the dam, lovely in the low sun and at sunset.
  • The rise with the lone gum. A tall single gum on the slope, for a walking portrait against the sky.
  • The sunset over the valley. The winery sits on the western slopes, looking over the Black Forest Valley, and on Kristie and Gareth's clear evening the sky turned red.

The venue also names the vineyard rows, The Barn and the mountain views, and a directory mentions the deck at sunset. Plan your portraits for the last hour of light: in mid-September the sun sets around ten past six, and the Macedon Ranges get cold quickly once it goes. In winter, the Macedon Ranges tourism advice is to move the ceremony earlier, because the light goes sooner.

Reception rooms

There are several rooms, and the right one depends on your numbers:

  • The UUMM Restaurant seats 120, or 160 for a cocktail reception; the venue's private events page gives 30 to 160. The semi-private UUMM Grape Room is beside it.
  • The Cellar Door Restaurant and Wine Bar takes 12 to 80 on exclusive hire.
  • The Wine Den takes about 12 to 15, for a very small dinner.

Catering is in-house, with seasonal menus that use the estate's own produce and wine. Groups of 30 or more need exclusive venue hire. A directory mentions an outdoor deck for cocktails at golden hour.

Kristie and Gareth's reception was in a room with big windows over the vines and timber panelling behind the head table. Long tables with crossback chairs were set with red and pink taper candles, carnations and bread rolls, and the champagne glasses for the tower stood on a wine barrel tied with a burgundy bow. A corner with gold frames, a vintage suitcase and a red post box for the wishing well sat by the door, and the duo played on the open floor in the evening light. The frames don't name the room, so ask the venue which suits your numbers.

A day at Mount Macedon Winery, hour by hour

Film has no clock, so this is Kristie and Gareth's day from their questionnaire, our booking and the light in the frames:

  • 1.30pm We arrive: pyjamas and champagne on the deck, the ring and the details.
  • Mid-afternoon Into the gown by the glass doors.
  • Before 4pm Guests gather in the garden to the saxophone and guitar duo.
  • 4pm The ceremony on the lawn, with the grandparents called up as surprise witnesses.
  • After the vows Hands raised, the walk out, and laughter in the garden by the rope swing.
  • Golden hour The paddocks, the dam and the rise, until sunset at about ten past six.
  • Evening The bridal introduction and the champagne tower, then dinner and the speeches.
  • 7.45pm First dance, then the dance floor.
  • 9.30pm The end of our coverage.

If it rains

The venue's wet weather options are The Barn and the Cellar Door Restaurant, so the ceremony can come inside without anyone leaving the estate, and the reception rooms are indoors anyway. The Macedon Ranges are cooler than the city, so keep the indoor option booked as a backup and tell your guests to bring a layer for the evening, even in spring. Kristie and Gareth had a clear, sunny afternoon and a red sunset.

Practical notes

  • The address is 433 Bawden Road, Woodend VIC 3442, about an hour's drive from Melbourne.
  • There is parking on site, and coaches can get in, with a large car park and a turning circle, so a guest bus is an option.
  • The main dining areas are wheelchair accessible, with an accessible bathroom. The ceremony lawn slopes, so plan front-row seats for anyone unsteady on grass.
  • Ten people can stay on site, in the Garden Suite and the Homestead. Dogs are welcome at the wedding but not in the accommodation.
  • A directory says six hours are included, with the music ending at 10.30pm and the event at 11pm.
  • The venue recommends local photographers, florists, hairdressers and cake makers, and a directory says the minimum is two guests.
